The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) continues to champion its Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education outreach efforts directed toward students in Kindergarten through grade 12. The goal of these efforts is to promote the awareness of employment opportunities within the laboratory and to cultivate the flow of STEM-literate talent into the lab’s workforce.

Each AFRL site is conducting STEM outreach activities guided by their particular research areas, unique regional characteristics, state standards, local school districts, and demographics.

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (AFB), Dayton, Ohio, is the location of four of the technology directorates (also known as labs).  At this site, STEM education supported initiatives include: the Dayton Regional STEM School (DRSS) which serves students in grades 6 through 12; the Wright Scholar Research Assistant Program which places high school juniors and seniors into the labs where they conduct summer research projects mentored by scientists and engineers; the Gaming Research Integration for Learning Laboratory (GRILL) which uses modeling and simulation to spark student interest in STEM related career fields;  the Wright-Patterson AFB Educational Outreach Office which offers Kindergarten through grade 12 STEM Outreach programs to local students and teachers. Program highlights include FIRST Lego Robotics (FLL), Wizards of Wright (WOW!), Scanning Electron Microscope EDucatorS (SEMEDS), Job Shadowing, Science Fair Support, and STEM-ulate Your Mind Teacher Workshops. 

Kirtland AFB, Albuquerque, New Mexico, is the location of the Directed Energy and Space Vehicles laboratories. At this site, STEM education supported initiatives include La Luz Academy, in partnership with the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, where hands-on STEM activities target students in grades 5 through 12 and where New Mexico teachers can attend summer STEM training.

Rome, New York, is the location of the Information laboratory. At this site, STEM education supported initiatives include: LEGO Robotics Summer Camp; Engineering Summer Camp; Cyber Summer Camp 1.0 & 2.0, where students learn the basics of Cyber Ethics, Computer Components, Networking, Cryptography, Cyber Threats, Data Hiding, Cyber Forensics, and Cyber Careers; Staying Safe Online Workshop; Cyber Patriot Competition; DimensionU March Math Madness Competition; Annual Challenge Competition, where high school students work to solve real-world problems in hopes of winning a paid summer internship; mentoring opportunities for high school students throughout the school year; tours of the facilities; career fair and science fair participation; and in-classroom demonstrations.

Eglin AFB, Fort Walton Beach, Florida, is the location of the Munitions laboratory.  At this site, STEM education supported initiatives include: the Okaloosa County STEMM Academy serving students in grades 5 through 7; and the Doolittle Institute and Innovative Dimensions Lab enhancing middle school students with a Robotics Club using Ev3storm robots.  A Robotic Interactive Learning Environment (RILE) provided by the University of West Florida gives teachers/students a remote-login for teaching.  Teaming up with Wright-Patterson AFB Discovery Lab's virtual environment to bring the Avatar experience to high school students teaching the need to collaborate virtually.   Mini-Urban Challenge is where high school students design a robotic unmanned car which autonomously navigates through a LEGOsR city; and Engineers for America which is a local program for Kindergarten through grade 12 students highlights real-world engineering challenges/opportunities.  Eglin AFB offers Scholars/Teaching programs to enhance the future of STEM.
